Ever since I’ve seen this wine opener at my aunt’s house some years ago, its laid-back, feminine figure comes to my mind whenever I picture a wine opener. Naturally, when I was old enough to drink, my first grown-up bar accessory was the Anna G.

Designed by Alessandro Mendini in 1994, the Anna G corkscrew is Alessi’s bestselling item.

The corkscrew was inspired by his friend, Anna Gili. And the Anna G corkscrew is the representation of how Mendini breathed life into anthropomorphic objects.

Mendini said, “I remembered as a child when my grandmother would open a bottle of wine at the table it always seemed like a good performance, a kind of ritual ballet: the turning of the head, the arms moving up and down, the sound of the cork popping from the bottle”.

The Anna G works like any other corkscrew – as you twist the head, the arms lift up, and when the arms are fully raised, you can push them down to release the cork.

It is an indispensable tool for any wine enthusiast and a must-have accessory for dinner parties. So many people commented on how interesting it was!

I display Anna G on the bar cart, and it is such a wonderful decorative object while being incredibly functional.

The Anna G comes in various colors including the special edition RED color (Fight AIDS). There is a reason why Anna G has been an icon – Mendini’s design has a universal appeal.
