As a guinea pig and rabbit owner, I’m always searching for good and safe bedding for small animals. Although I scoop out soiled areas every day, I want the bedding to be absorbent, odor resistant, and safe for the animals’ health. I’ve tried various beddings from wood shavings to pelleted bedding, and Carefresh Natural Pet Bedding is by far the most satisfactory in the industry if you can afford it.

The bedding is made of paper, which is a healthy bedding choice for most small animals. Small ingestion is okay (as far as I know), and paper bedding doesn’t trigger any respiratory problems as some wood shavings do. The bedding comes in different sizes (14L, 30L, and 60L), the largest being the most economical option. The bedding is tightly compressed in a plastic bag, and it starts to expand once you spread it over the cage.

The Carefresh bedding advertises that it controls odor for 10 days, is 3 times more absorbent than shavings, and is 99% dust free. I haven’t left the cage uncleaned for more than 2 days, so I can’t really comment on the 10-day odor control promise. Even on the second day, I smell urine; however, it is not as strong as on pine shavings or newspaper. No matter what the bedding advertises, I scoop out the soiled areas as frequently as I can for hygiene.

The bedding is extremely absorbent, and no other bedding is as absorbent as the Carefresh. With the wood shavings, the soiled area soaked all the way and stained the bottom of the litter pan. I rarely have that issue with Carefresh.

And it is much softer than other bedding types. My guinea pig loves sleeping on it, rolling on it, eating on it, and so on. The bedding keeps the animals warm and well-insulated, providing a safe shelter for them to cuddle and lounge.

If you’re allergic to dust like me, everything triggers your allergy. I need to wear a mask whenever I handle hay. I still need to wear a mask when I clean my piggies’ cage because the Carefresh bedding has fine dust and I’m very sensitive, but it is much less noticeable than other bedding.

These are quite expensive ($16.49 for 60L at Amazon), even through discounted online retailers. But my pets love it. And cleaning’s been much easier, so I’m happy.
