From time to time, I ventured out to try a handful of eco-friendly and natural dishwasher detergents as my quest for eco-friendly household products never ends.
Unfortunately, their performances let me down, and I was forced to run the cycle again or hand wash dirty plates again. So for the longest time ever, I was sticking to Cascade’s Platinum Dishwashing Pods. With those, all my dishes came out sparkling clean. And recently, Cascade upped their game by introducing the Pure Essentials Action Pacs, the dishwashing pods made with bio-based ingredients, so I had to give them a try.

The Pure Essentials’ formula is biodegradable and does not contain phosphate, prophyl-paraben, butyl-paraben, SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) and chlorine bleach.

The detergent pods have 2 scents available – Lemon and Orange Blossom, and they are infused with essential oils.
Unlike other Cascade detergent pods, the Pure Essentials have dye free liquid detergent. The colorless liquid is much preferred, especially for households with kids because the pods look less tempting.

Each pod is about the same size as the Cascade Platinum pod (or Tide laundry detergent pod), and it fits into the dishwasher’s detergent slot. Some natural detergent pods I’ve tried didn’t fit, so that’s important.

The Pure Essentials Pods get my dishes cleaned as effectively as the regular Cascade Platinum pods do, and that’s quite a feat. I don’t pre-rinse the dishes before I load them in the dishwasher, so the detergent has a fair amount of work to do. One Pure Essentials Pod removes bacon grease, burned-on eggs and a day-old ketchup.

I'll be alternating the Platinum and Pure Essentials, depending on the grocery store's availability and promotion it runs.
