I noticed that many Koreans use what is known as “cushion foundation” while I was staying in Korea. The cushion foundation refers to a foundation soaked in the sponge for convenience and a dewy finish, and it is immensely popular. The wide selection of cushion foundations continues to be in steady demand in this competitive beauty market. There are countless options, ranging from affordable drugstore brands to ones from prestigious brands. I wasn’t sure which one to try because virtually every brand carried some type of cushion foundation, but one of the Youtubers I follow was speaking so highly of this foundation from Hera, so I decided to give it a try.

Hera’s Black Cushion is introduced in 2019 (relatively new); however, it was so popular that I had to visit 3 department stores to find the shade that matched my skin tone! The salesperson was very helpful and patient. I ended up getting No. 21, which is a very close match to my fair skin with a warm undertone. The foundation comes in a sleek black compact with a mirror. The formula contains sunscreen for added sun protection (SPF 34/ PA ++).

I was excited to learn that it came with a refill, doubling the content. Each refill contains 15g of product, so it’s comparable to most liquid foundations (30g).

Once I lift the lid, there was a black foil to prevent the product from drying.

The sponge it came with was of high quality and didn’t seem to absorb too much product, which is always a plus. I’d hate to waste foundation that way.

The coverage is decent and is buildable.

The biggest complaint I have with this foundation (for most K-beauty products in general) was the lack of shade options. You rarely find deeper shades since there isn’t much demand.

It is undoubtedly very convenient to use, and reapplying or touching up is virtually mess-free. I don’t have to use my fingers to apply, and I don’t need to carry a separate sponge (like BeautyBlender), making it perfect for traveling!
