My husband and I start a morning with freshly-brewed coffee. Naturally, espresso machines are indispensable kitchen appliances that we reach for every day. We have a Barista Express from Breville, a semi-automatic espresso maker with a built-in grinder. We still enjoy the process of choosing the beans we like, grinding them, and making espressos. But only on weekends! Every time I want a shot of espresso, I need to grind, tamper, brew, and dump the coffee. It takes a long and gets messy even with the help of a knock box, especially when you’re making multiple shots at a time. Sometimes, you need to simplify the coffee-making process.
Because I didn’t want to buy another machine like Keurig (that’s an additional appliance I needed to get on top of the $600 that I already spent on the Barista Express), I looked into single-serve coffee pods that can fit into the portafilter. I found the Easy Serving Espresso (ESE) Pods from illy, and I could not be happier.
Think of these pods as Keurig cups for espresso machines.
Each box contains 18 individually wrapped coffee pods, ground and tampered to produce a perfect cup of espresso. They are compatible with any E.S.E. espresso machines, including illy and Breville machines. I did not have any problem using them with the Barista Express, and each pod fits perfectly on the Breville portafilter.
Each single-serving paper pod includes 6.9g of premeasured, ground Arabica coffee. Each pod is individually wrapped and sealed to ensure maximum freshness. The ESE pods remove the whole manual process of a semi-automatic espresso machine. All I need to do is place the pod on the portafilter and press a button. And voila! I get a perfect shot of espresso with crema on top.
Because they’re pre-measured and tampered with just the right amount of pressure, I get consistent shots of espressos, every time. The Barista Express has a gauge that measures the coffee pressure, and whenever I brew a cup with an illy pod, it always falls in the perfect pressure range.
Because the pods are essentially individually wrapped, single-serving espresso shots, they’ll be great for offices. Although they’re not as maintenance-free as Keurig cups, they are the simplest and cleanest to brew espressos using a semi-automatic espresso machine.
Currently, the illy E.S.E. pods come in 3 varieties – Decaffeinated, Medium, and Dark Roast. The pods can be purchased at Sur La Table and illy. The coffee tastes very authentic. After all, it’s illy. With the E.S.E. pods, I enjoy my espresso machine even more.
