My husband LOVES to microwave everything. His motto is, “let’s spend as little time as possible in the kitchen”, so anything he finds in the fridge gets reheated in the microwave. Alas, the mess he leaves behind. It’s no one’s fault, but cleaning the microwave with lots of stuck-on food particles and sauces is never fun. Since I’m not a fan of plastic wraps (they tend to melt in a microwave and stick on a bowl), I was frantically looking for a microwave-safe lid.
I found the “Universal Silicone Lid” from Le Creuset, and it is far superior to other lids I’ve considered. All my kitchen gadgets, appliances, and dishes are either in white or grey (stainless steel), so I was super excited that the lid wasn’t Le Creuset’s typical flaming red, orange or blue. I know, I need to get out of my monochromatic comfort zone!
There were 2 sizes at the Le Creuset store: 8” in diameter and 11” in diameter.
I bought the 8” lid since it was mainly going to be used to reheat 1-2 servings of food.
I love the flexibility of the lid.
It skims the rims of the bowl to create a tight seal so boiling tomato sauce doesn’t escape.
I didn’t see this silicone cover in other kitchen supplies stores that carry Le Creuset like Crate and Barrel or Bed Bath and Beyond, so it must be exclusive to the Le Creuset boutiques (that’s where I found it).
I prefer silicone over plastic for kitchen gadgets because it’s much more durable and resists heat better. The lid is heat resistant up to 482 degrees.
The Universal Silicone Lid is dishwasher, fridge, freezer, oven, and microwave safe – exactly what my husband needs! He uses it to reheat any leftover he finds in the fridge and toss it in a dishwasher along with the bowl and flatware. And most importantly, the microwave stays clean.
I can think of so many uses for the lid that I’m thinking about getting a few more, including the 11” lid. Storing both cold and hot items, baking dough, picnic lunch… It’s truly universal.
