I’ve been exclusively using Miele’s dishwasher detergent tablets ever since I upgraded to Miele appliances. I had been a decades-long user of KitchenAid dishwasher and Cascade detergent combo, but I transitioned to the Ultra Tabs Multi.
These dishwashing tabs came with my brand-new dishwasher as samples, and I gave them a go although I’ve never used them. I mean they’re free, so why not?
My immediate response to using this detergent was that it was gentle yet effective. There are many “environmentally-friendly” detergents that claim to clean dishes well, but most of them were underperforming at best.
I ran multiple cycles with various dirty dishes – from oven-baked dishes to day-old dishes, and they came out clean every time. They may be synergetic with Miele dishwashers, but I’m very impressed with these tablets. In fact, these tablets are so effective that I usually cut them in half.
The only downside to these detergent tablets is probably the price. Miele’s online store is the only online retailer in the US market that I know of, and it apparently never goes on sale or offers any kind of promotion! Miele doesn’t offer any discount on bulk purchases, either. It doesn’t matter whether you’re buying a 60-tab packet or a 180-tab packet, the unit price remains unchanged at 50 cents per tab.
Miele’s Ultra Tabs are unscented tablets that can be used on all dishwasher-safe items. They aren’t acid-based cleaners, so you can safely wash items that are vulnerable to acidic cleaners.
Over the years of using Cascade, the only downside I had was its rather obnoxious fragrance. The dishwashing tabs came in either lemon or fresh, and they always left some lingering fragrance on my plasticware. Miele’s tablets are unscented, which solves the problem Cascade detergents presented.
Ah! I almost forgot to mention - don’t panic if you are having a hard time unwrapping the “plastic”, thin wrapper. It’s not meant to be unwrapped. Just like Cascade dishwashing tablets, the wrapper dissolves in water, both cold and hot water settings. I was doubtful as well because it really looked like wrappers that need to be removed, unlike most dissolvable detergents! But the detergent dissolved completely even in the quick wash setting.
You can maximize the benefits your dishwasher has to offer by adding rinse aid or salt if you have hard water.
I purchased the complete Miele dishwasher accessories set – Ultra Tabs Multi, rinse aid, and salt – to prolong the life of my 5K investment, and I honestly couldn’t be happier.
