If you love Japanese udon noodles and are looking for instant noodles for a quick and easy meal, check out Donbei Kitsune Udon from Nissin. I came across these udon noodles while I was shopping at Mitsuwa, a large Japanese grocery joint. They are apparently the bestselling instant noodles in Japan. I like most Nissin noodles, so I bought one to try.

The noodles are thick, mimicking the traditional udon noodles; however, I find them slightly lacking in texture. Although they are much thicker than most instant noodles, I much prefer the fresh udon noodles that I can make with my stand mixer. But for instant noodles, they are satisfactory.

I was highly impressed with the fried tofu block that was included. The size and thickness are true to the descriptive picture, and it was so yummy! It gets slightly larger when I pour water, and it is much better than most instant veggie flakes I’ve tried. I think this fried tofu really sets this noodle on top of the game.

You get 2 sauce packets, both powders.

The larger powder packet is for the broth, and you can control the amount you add if you’re watching the sodium content. I tried it following the suggested recipe (the entire sauce packet and water to the line on the bowl); however, it turned out to be way too salty for my liking. I suggest either you add more water or decrease the sauce.

The smaller packet contains some kind of crushed red pepper. And I add the entire content because it’s not that spicy.

What a great find. I loved it so much that I went back and bought a box!
