Perfectly Organized Linen Closet

The linen cabinet in my master bathroom seemed to be a landing zone for all sorts of clutter – towels, various cleaning supplies, unused products, extra rolls of toilet paper, and so on. I was blessed with ample cabinet space; however, piling the “bathroom products” on the shelves was not only messy/unorganized but also inefficient because I needed to go through the pile to find what I wanted every time.

I decluttered and moved the products that I don’t reach for on a regular basis to the under-sink cabinet to give my linen closet an organized look. It freed up so much space that I was able to add a few decorative accents, which always bring me joy every time I open the cabinet door.

  • Decluttering

It took me a while to realize that I don’t need 4 bottles of half-used shampoos and 5 different bathroom cleaners.

Most people use only a number of products on a daily (or weekly) basis. I had a lot of extra shampoo/conditioner/body wash bottles that I was not using at the moment. I didn’t foresee myself using them within a few weeks, so I moved them to the under-sink cabinet. That way, I can conveniently grab those extra bottles when I run out, but I don’t have to see them every day when I opened the linen cabinet.

  • Divide and Conquer

If you share the bathroom with another person or people, grouping personal items together make everything easier. I share my bathroom with my husband, and we keep all our towels in the linen cabinet. I dedicated a shelf for myself and another for my husband, so our bath towels don’t get mixed up.

You see, both of us use white towels, so organizing them on separate shelves helped a lot. We share hand towels, so I designated a lower shelf for hand towels only.

All the other items in the linen cabinets are common “supplies” that we share together like toilet paper and cleaning supplies, so I didn’t group them as I did with our towels. Instead, I utilized baskets.

  • Utilizing Baskets

So on to my next point – utilizing baskets.

Baskets work great for organizing grouped items. Multiple rolls of toilet paper or various cleaning bottles can look visually cluttered. When stored in matching baskets, however, they look much more organized.

The baskets also serve the practical function of keeping things together. You know which basket to reach for when you’re looking for a hair dryer, for instance. And in that basket, there is always going to be a hair dryer. If you make yourself this rule, then you just established a system, and your closet is going to stay organized.

My favorite basket for various organizational projects is from Pottery Barn.

The Savannah Baskets are solidly constructed and fit most shelves. They are available in Medium and Large. For most shelves, I like to use medium baskets.

I store various cleaning supplies for bathroom cleaning in one basket. For routine bathroom cleaning, I use an all-purpose cleaner, a mirror cleaner, and a toilet bowl cleaner. I once had this cleaner-crazed phase, and I was buying a cleaner for every household task. But soon I realized that I don’t need a separate cleaner for tiles, granite tops, fixtures, and stainless steel, along with a bunch of antibacterial cleaners. So, I narrowed my routine cleaners down to 3. So far no one’s gotten sick, and my bathroom is clean.

  • Decorative Accents

Adding decorative accents is purely optional, and if you’re running out of shelf space, you can certainly skip this step. After decluttering and reorganizing, I actually had some shelf space left to add some accent pieces.

Any home décor accents work, but they are impactful. I find those finishing touches really complete the overall look of my linen cabinet and add a bit of character. I added this decorative vase I got from West Elm years ago and some faux florals from Home Goods.

Of course, I have other products I use daily such as deodorants, moisturizers, hair brushes, floss, and other sorts. But I either keep them out on the countertop or inside a vanity drawer to keep the bathroom as clutter-free as possible. And it’s been working out for me.
