I’ve tried many facial toners and essences out there over the years, and I was always somewhat disappointed. Most left my skin refreshed and somewhat hydrated, but I haven’t experienced any dramatic improvements. So for a long time, I’ve thought toners are nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Then I got to try SK-II’s Pitera essence when Sephora sent out a deluxe sample along with my foundation purchase, and I am a huge pro-toner person now. Or more like pro-Pitera!

What is it?

This watery essence is infused with over 90% Pitera™, a “bio-ingredient containing over 50 micro-nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and organic acids to condition skin’s natural functions”.

I now buy the largest size (11 fl oz) because I like the convenience of the pump and you can’t beat the value price ($290). That’s $145 savings (from $435).

The Facial Treatment Essence promises 5 notable benefits:

Brighter Glow

Prevents Sun Spots

Less Visible Wrinkles

Smoother Texture

Suppler Skin

My Impressions

You may not notice the improvements right away, but be patient and use it for a few months.

My complexion is noticeably brighter, and my skin looks healthy and radiant.

Not to mention it preps my skin for serums and moisturizers like no other.

I apply about a quarter-sized amount into my hand and gently apply it on my face.

It’s great at calming any skin irritation (from sun exposure, especially!), so I look forward to using it at night.

You can also use a cotton pad to apply it.

I use saturated cotton pads whenever my skin is inflamed or irritated in summer, and it always does the trick. I find the essence to be much more effective than soothing gels that contain aloe vera.

Any Cons?

If I have to come up with a not-so-great thing about the essence, it’d be the fragrance.

Don’t be alarmed that the initial fragrance is completely weird.

Many people say it smells like fermented rice.

And honestly, it was not a pleasant smell for me. However, within days, you get so accustomed to the scent that hardly notice it.

If you can deal with the smell for a few days, I’d say it is definitely worth trying.
