Every now and then, your washer needs a cleaning. You’d think appliances like dishwashers or washing machines wouldn’t need to be cleaned since they technically wash themselves. I discovered just how nasty my washer was when the installers performed a “deep cleaning” (disassembling parts and cleaning them) when I moved to a new house. Ever since then, I’ve been religiously taking care of my washer using its self-clean cycle and Tide Washing Machine Cleaner. I get surprised every time I run the self-clean cycle – you’d be surprised to see just how nasty a washing machine is, as well. The first time I ran the self-clean cycle, the tub shortly filled with soap residue during the cycle, even if I didn’t add any detergent. I measure detergent quite precisely, so it was shocking.

My washer is 5 years old, which is not terribly old for a home appliance, so I very well intend to get more years out of it. I bought this washing machine cleaner from Tide, hoping to get more thorough cleaning results, and so far, I’m satisfied. I debated between this and another washing machine cleaner (you can find it easily if you google or Amazon search washing machine cleaner), but ultimately, I decided to go with this one. Maybe I have brand loyalty, but I generally have great results with Tide products.

The set contains 5 cleaner packets, and I can store them away until I’m ready to clean the washer. I like how they’re individually packaged because these are not meant for everyday use.

I clean my washer every month or whenever I wash my dog’s bed cover to remove any dander or hair that is left behind. So yeah, I’m digging this individual packaging.

They’re very easy to use. Just dump a packet directly into the tub and run either a self-clean cycle or a normal cycle in a hot water setting. It can be used in both front and top-loading washers. And unlike dishwasher cleaner, this washer cleaner is not meant to be used with other clothes or laundry because it might damage the garment. Make sure the tub is empty before running the cleaning cycle.

The formula has the distinctive Tide detergent scent, although on the stronger side. It does a tremendously great job at deodorizing a smelly tub, but I don’t think such a strong scent is necessary on a monthly basis. The scent lingers even after the clean cycle and lasts until you run another cycle with laundry. It doesn’t bother me much because I’m used to Tide detergent scents, and it’s not foul, but I’d definitely approach this cleaner with caution if you’re sensitive to fragrances or pregnant.

The cleaner is highly effective at cleaning the tub and neutralizing any moldy odor found in the washer. After the cycle, the inside of the tub was noticeably shinier and cleaner. It appeared and felt much cleaner than before. Pretty great.
I’m willing to repurchase this cleaner to be used as a monthly washer maintenance product, and it will deliver what it claims to do.
