Honestly, I don’t understand why box springs need to be expensive these days. I shopped around for box springs, and none of the options I looked at was below $400. The fact that so many mattress companies charge a high premium for a rectangular block with the sole purpose of supporting a mattress is beyond me, but apparently, that’s the kind of world we live in. Investing in a good mattress, I get. Sleep is important, and your mattress is what supports you while you sleep. But the box spring that supports the mattress? I don’t get.

I must’ve spent weeks deciding on the box spring, and I finally decided to get this box spring from Zinus. I’ve gotta tell ya – I was so worried that it’d be a subpar product because it was only $100 ($104, to be exact). And I was still skeptical when the delivery man brought the box inside because the box wasn’t large enough to hold a box spring. The last time I purchased a box spring was over a decade ago, and it was a big delivery.

Upon unboxing, the parts were neatly packaged, patiently awaiting assembly.

The assembly was so easy, and I was able to put it together without any problem. The instructions were very clear and included pictures for illustration.

All the hardware and tools needed for the assembly are included in the packaging, so no need to take out your toolbox. The wrench provided was sturdy and of good quality.

Zinus is a mattress brand that is relatively new, but it’s been steadily gaining its fanbase with its affordability and quality. I read countless reviews on Zinus products, and most spoke very highly of them.

I have a bed frame from Ethan Allen called Chloe Bed. As you can see below, this sleigh bed requires a specific box spring because the gap between the headboard and the base is fixed.

Most bedframes consist of a bed frame and a headboard that sits flat, perpendicularly. With those beds, you can choose the heights of the mattress and box springs liberally without any problem. Your bed may be lower or higher, depending on the thickness of the mattress and box spring. Or you may lose some of the backrests if the mattress were to be too thick, but it can work. My bed, however, has a gap, so I had to be careful when I was choosing the box spring. My mattress is 12” thick, so my box spring needed to be a low profile (8” or lower). But if the box spring were to be too low, my mattress would sit too low from the headboard, and I’d had to deal with the gap (what if my phone falls!?). Anyway, Zinus had the perfect box spring – its height is 7.5”, which was exactly what I needed.

Zinus’ Essential Upholstered Box Spring comes in Twin, Full, Queen and King sizes. And it has a modern grey body. The box spring is tucked inside my bedframe, and I can’t actually see the box spring, so it doesn’t really matter. But still, it itself is a pretty box spring, wrapped around in grey fabric.

The frame is constructed in strong steel for stability and includes a center support rod for added support. The frame is going to last me decades!

The wooden slats do not lie flat at first but don’t let that dissuade you. As soon as you put the mattress on, the slats lie flat and support the mattress evenly.

The frame has been supporting my mattress for weeks now, and so far, so good!

It doesn’t squeak or wobble, and it doesn’t make my mattress sag, either. I’m so glad I did my research and purchased this “cheaper” box spring.
