I started making one “special drink” while cooking. Sometimes wine, sometimes sparkling water with lime in a nice glass. It sounds ridiculous typing it out but it tricks my brain into feeling like cooking time belongs to me instead of work.

I stopped using my bright overhead kitchen lights unless I'm cleaning.

Instead I cook with the under-cabinet lighting and a warm lamp on the dining table. Add a jazz playlist or acoustic music, and the kitchen suddenly feels like somewhere I want to be instead of somewhere I'm working. The food doesn't change, but somehow my mood does.

And also I intentionally tell myself to finish the table with a "restaurant moment". Even if I'm eating leftovers by myself, I spend ten extra seconds plating the food.

Fresh cracked pepper. A squeeze of lemon. Herbs if I have them. I sit down with a real plate instead of eating from the pan. Those tiny finishing touches make cooking feel like an act of taking care of myself rather than just producing calories.
