Extra Details:

I’m getting into doing gel nails at home and would love real-world advice from people who’ve actually cracked the code. From prep to removal, I want to learn how to get salon-quality results without wrecking my nails. Looking for hacks, favorite products, and things you wish you knew sooner — especially when it comes to nail health, longevity, and avoiding damage.

If you’re just starting out, prep is everything. Lightly buffing the nail surface, pushing back cuticles, and wiping with alcohol before applying gel makes way more difference than any fancy top coat. Skipping prep is the #1 reason gel lifts early.

For lamps, LED is faster and more reliable than UV (and feels less sketchy). You don’t need a crazy expensive one, but don’t go for the cheapest either — bad lamps = under-cured gel = peeling and damage.

Removal is where most people destroy their nails. Don’t peel. Ever. Soak with acetone, wrap with foil or clips, and gently push off with a wooden stick. If it doesn’t come off easily, soak longer. Ripping gel off takes layers of your nail with it (learned this sadly).

Cuticle oil is not optional — use it daily. It literally keeps your nails flexible and prevents peeling. Also try to give your nails “rest days” between sets if you can.

And one random tip: thinner layers always beat thick ones. Cure between every coat and resist the urge to glob it on. Once you get the routine down, DIY gel is honestly better than most salons — cheaper, cleaner, and you control the damage.

Great if you’re new to gel nails. It typically includes everything you need (base/top coat + polish + basic tools) so you don’t have to buy separate components. Good for building confidence without over-spending.
