Everywhere I look lately — Instagram reels, TikTok hauls, even local pop-up shops — Labubu is everywhere. People are calling it the next big designer toy wave, and others say it’s a passing fad that’ll end up in the “regret” bin. If you’ve collected Labubu, is it worth the hype (and the price), or is it all just social media smoke?

Labubu feels like it could be the next Be@rbrick in terms of hype, but I’m not convinced it’ll have the same long-term collector legacy. Yeah, the designs are super quirky and “ugly cute” in a way that makes them stand out, and the limited drops/celebrity hype have resale prices going wild right now (some rare ones even hit six figures 😳). But it’s also starting to feel a bit like the NFT or the Beanie Babies craze—everyone’s chasing them, counterfeits are already flooding the market, and the momentum could burn out fast.

If you’re buying because you genuinely love the look and want them on your shelf, go for it—they’re fun conversation pieces. But if you’re in it for investment, I’d be cautious until we see if Labubu can build the same cultural staying power Be@rbrick has.

I think Labubu is riding a massive wave of hype right now, but whether it’s the “next Be@rbrick” really depends on what you value in a collectible. The designs are undeniably fun—there’s this weird mix of creepy and cute that makes them super distinctive—and the limited drops plus Pop Mart’s marketing machine have turned them into instant sellouts. But I’ve also noticed the resale market feels a bit volatile, and fakes are already everywhere, which is usually a red flag in the long run.

If you’re collecting for pure enjoyment and like having something playful and conversation-worthy on your shelf, I totally get the appeal. If you’re buying as an investment, I’d treat it more like a gamble than a sure thing.
