I always thought fabric softener made clothes cleaner, but it actually leaves a coating that traps sweat, oils, and detergent residue inside moisture-wicking fabrics. I stopped using it on my activewear and started rinsing those loads a little more thoroughly. After a few washes, the lingering odor basically disappeared. Now I only use softener on towels and regular cotton clothing.
And also don't let sweaty clothes sit in the hamper.
This sounds ridiculously simple, but it probably made a bigger difference than changing detergent. If I know a shirt is completely soaked after a workout or being outside all day, I hang it over the edge of the hamper or on a drying rack first. Letting damp clothes sit in a pile overnight seems to let bacteria multiply, and that's when the permanent funk starts. Ever since I started drying them before laundry day, they stay fresh much longer.
