Every smart thermostat guide online assumes a newer house with a C-wire already in the wall, which mine doesn't have. Wondering if something like the Ecobee or Nest actually handles that gracefully, or if I need a separate adapter kit no matter what. Also curious if anyone regretted going smart at all, since I've heard some people just go back to a basic programmable one.

Almost paid an electrician $150 to deal with this until I found out Ecobee just... includes an adapter for exactly this problem. Box comes with a "power extender kit," 20 minutes with a screwdriver and a YouTube video, done. I felt genuinely stupid for almost paying someone else to do this.
The room sensor is the actual sleeper hit here. Our upstairs runs like a sauna compared to the hallway where the old thermostat sat, so it was constantly guessing wrong. Putting a second sensor upstairs fixed that instantly — feels obvious in hindsight, annoyingly.
My partner, who treats "smart home" products like a personal insult, still just turns the dial and has never once complained. That's the real endorsement here.
