Culturally this feels like a bigger deal in some families than others, and I never know if I'm underdoing it or way overthinking a bottle of local snacks.
Stop bringing wine, everyone brings wine, it's the most boring possible gift and half the time it's not even good wine.
What actually landed well was a nice box of coffee/tea specific to where I'm from that they can't easily get there — something consumable so it doesn't become clutter they have to awkwardly display forever. Bonus points if it's from a specific local roaster instead of something generic, gives you an actual story to tell over breakfast instead of just handing over a bag silently.
Also — bring something for the kids if there are any, separately from the "host gift." Nobody tells you this but showing up empty-handed for the kids while giving the parents a nice gift creates weird energy fast.
For the kids, I go with a small Lego set specific to something from where I live — not a generic set they could buy locally, one that's regionally themed or hard to find where they are. It's small enough to fit in a suitcase, doesn't need batteries or Wi-Fi so there's no setup drama, and gives them something to actually do with you during the visit instead of just unwrapping it and moving on. Kids remember "the aunt who brought the cool building set" way more than they remember another stuffed animal.
