What game still gives you that “old-school MMO addiction” feeling in 2026?

Requirements:

Must have active playerbase

No pay-to-win garbage

Good progression/grind loop

Can be MMO or MMO-lite

Extra Details:

I’m trying to find a game that captures that old-school feeling where you accidentally play for 12 hours straight and forget real life exists. A lot of modern games feel overdesigned, monetized to death, or just soulless. Looking for something with real progression, community, grind, rare loot, meaningful crafting, or that “one more dungeon” addiction.

Old School RuneScape
Still probably the king of “I logged in for 20 minutes and now it’s 4AM.” It has massive grind satisfaction, and rare drops feel legendary.

OSRS players are honestly some of the weirdest people on the internet but in a good way lol.

You’ve got people spending 800 hours grinding for a tiny cosmetic pet that follows them around, dudes making accounts where they can only stand in one area of the map forever, and entire communities debating the most efficient way to click fake rocks.

The game also forces people to actually talk to each other unlike most modern MMOs where everyone speedruns silently through content. Half the experience is random bank conversations, clan drama, getting roasted by strangers, or some veteran player randomly giving you advice.

Everybody kinda knows the game is ridiculous and that’s what makes the community fun. It feels less corporate and polished and more like a giant shared addiction.

This is the closest thing to digital crack for MMO players who love progression.
